FAQs

Can your method help other learning problems besides dyslexia?

It can. A partial list of other learning disabilities includes:
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD)
Difficulties manipulating symbols and concepts dealing with numbers (Dyscalculia/Acalculia)
Handwriting difficulties (Disgraphia/Agraphia)
Spatial awareness, co-ordination or social awareness difficulties (Dyspraxia)
Problems with listening or distinguishing sounds (Central Auditory Processing Disorder/CAPD)

These difficulties stem from the same elements that cause dyslexia and, therefore, they can also be addressed during a Davis Dyslexia Correction® program. All Davis programs use a drug free approach

Who can benefit from taking a program?

Anyone 8 years and older who has learning difficulties can benefit from a Davis Correction program, as long as they are motivated and willing to continue using their tools after the week. Each client must be willing and motivated to pursue the program for self-improvement, not because someone else insists.

What is the Davis Reading Program for Young Learners?

This program is based on the Davis methods for dyslexia correction. It helps young learners ages 5-8 to:

Focus attention
Improve eye-hand coordination
Learn the alphabet
Learn basic punctuation
Develop and strengthen pre-reading and basic reading skills
Prevent the potential of a learning problem
Improve sight word recognition and comprehension
Establish life-long "how to learn" skills

Will I see results?

YES. If you complete the program, are motivated, want to change, are responsible and willing to continue working on your dyslexia after the initial week is finished—then you will see great results!

What can a client expect to gain?

Everyone has their own unique experience during their program, which is reflected in what they take away from their experience, however, it is common for clients to gain:
Basic tools of literacy
The ability to recognize and correct disorientations at will
The ability to focus attention
The knowledge of how to eliminate confusions in words and symbols
Increased self-confidence and ability in reading, writing, math or physical skills
Becoming comfortable with a method of learning that can be used throughout life

This knowledge impacts many facets of life and other remediation and therapy programs will work more effectively and faster with these tools in use.

What happens after the program?
After the program, the client will have to continue to use their tools to maintain their success.

A list of the trigger words will be given to the client along with a Symbol Mastery® kit. It is up to the client to continue mastering each of these words in order to continue their progress, ultimately leading to the correction of their dyslexia.

Follow-up support is also included as part of the program. This includes telephone consultations, follow up emails, and if needed up to 3 two hour sessions review sessions to review the basic Davis tools.

Are the Davis Methods the same for adult clients?

Yes, in fact the program was originally developed for adults. Ron Davis was 38 when he discovered the tools that allowed him to read a whole book for the first time in his life. After this, he followed up by doing research and experiments with adult dyslexic volunteers.

Adult clients working with a facilitator tend to progress very quickly. Once you can recognize and resolve your own disorientations you can perceive letters and words accurately. Adults approach the program with a degree of motivation and maturity that makes it possible for them to take control of their tools quickly and consistently.

How much improvement in reading or writing can be expected?

By the end of the program week, there is usually a noticeable difference. This program is a jumpstart. Future progress is determined by an individual's motivation, and continued use of Symbol Mastery after the program.

Does not use external devices such as special glasses or colored sheets, etc
Is a medication free approach
Offers individuals personal control and responsibility
An alternative to phonics-based approaches
Offers a fun program without drill or memorization
Believes understanding leads to mastery
Focuses on renewed self-esteem and confidence
Offers a week unlike any other

Will my child still need remedial help after the program?

Once the client has completed all the trigger words and using their tools has become automatic, this should not be necessary. However, individuals receiving additional tutorial services are able to use those services more effectively following the Program.

Why do you say correct instead of cure?

Cure implies an illness (mental or physical); correct means to remove errors and mistakes, to make right. By correcting perception, the disabling aspects of dyslexia are no longer a problem, therefore dyslexia cannot be cured or grown out of, but it can be corrected.

What are the key aspects of the Davis Dyslexia Correction program?
Orientation Counseling and Symbol Mastery. Davis Dyslexia Correction always includes both of these components.
Davis Orientation Counseling® teaches dyslexic students how to recognize and control the mental state that leads to distorted and confused perceptions of letters, words and numerals. Through a simple mental technique, the students learn to turn off the thought processes that cause misperceptions. Instead, they are able to restore their minds to a relaxed and focused state, suitable for reading and other studies. Once Orientation is learned, the student is ready to build the conceptual skills that will allow them to overcome problems stemming from dyslexia.
Davis Symbol Mastery® gives dyslexic students the ability to think with symbols and words, so they can learn to read easily and with full comprehension. Using clay, students first work with the alphabet, numerals, and punctuation marks, to make sure that they have an accurate perception and understanding of these symbols. Students then use clay to model the trigger words—the short abstract words, frequently encountered in reading, such as and, the, to, or it. These words cause problems when dyslexic students cannot form a mental picture to go along with them. Through Symbol Mastery, the student makes a three-dimensional clay model of the meaning of each word, together with a model of the letters of the words. With this approach, learning is permanent.
